The Arches Vault: A new artist-led cultural space on Brighton’s seafront

About

The Arches Vault — Equity Participation

The Arches Vault is our next big step: a new, permanent cultural hub beneath the seafront arches by the i360. Building on the award-winning Mid Street Lab model, The Vault will be a bold, inclusive space for sustainable production, ethical sales, and community-rooted creative practice — all led by artists. Backed by Brighton Dome, Sussex University, and Hove Council, this space is part of a 10-year lease to reshape how culture happens in Brighton — from the ground up.

What's happening

Why It Matters

In Brighton, less than 10% of gallery artists come from working-class backgrounds. Rising rents and shrinking public space are driving grassroots creatives out. The Vault will change that.

This isn’t another pop-up. It’s a structural intervention — designed to offer real pathways to visibility, ownership, and cultural equity.

Together with our original site in Kemptown, The Vault will complete our closed-loop model: from making, to showing, to selling — with care, community, and dignity.

Your Chance to Shape the Future

We’re inviting:

  • 🎨 Established artists ready to share space and shape cultural direction
  • 🧡 Emerging patrons who want their support to make a lasting impact
  • 🏛️ Public/private institutions who believe in creative regeneration

Supporters who contribute over £50 can become Equity Patrons, with access to shared ownership decisions, early previews, and programme input. Every donation — from £5 to £5,000 — helps us secure the lease and open the doors.

🗓 We must raise £6,000 in 10 working days to activate the lease.

Born from a Belief

“I started Mid Street Lab two years ago — self-funded and uncertain — because I couldn’t ignore what was missing. We needed space to belong. Not just to show work, but to shape what culture looks like. That’s what The Vault is.”
— JJ Wachter, Founder
